Pre amp/compressor

Hey Brandon, very cool forums! This is the question I emailed you before your time off. I figured this would be a good place for it. So here it is....
Problem-My vocal sucks ass. I'm using a shure PG58 going into my old 4 track that I'm using as my interface into the pc (into the line input) My sound card is stock, so I am only getting 16 bits. I'm looking at a preamp or standalone compressor or a combination. Like one from ART that has a built in compressor/limiter. Obviously if I upgrade sound card and get a preamp my vocals will improve.
My question-I cant afford both at the same time, which one would be the biggest improvement the preamp or sound card?
Thanks
Ryan

To answer your question, let me explain my set up.

Shure PG57
BOSS BR 532
1 RCA to 1/8" miniplug Cable ran directly into the stock soundcard on my PC.

So interestingly enough, not only are we using similar mics, but we're using a very similar set up too. In this case, based on my own results, I would assume that the thing you need to replace isn't the sound card.

Hope that answers your question.

Hey there folks.  This is my first post so excuse me if I'm stepping on any toes.  Also, considering this question was asked almost a year ago, it's probably resolved itself...lol.  Anyway, I would say preamp.  If your soundcard is running at 16bit, it's not a question of quality as much as it is volume when it comes to bit depth.   I would suggest a nice warm preamp or maybe a better mic.  A decent condenser mic goes pretty cheap anymore and some warm ribbon mics are out there under $100 anymore!

Just my 2.5 cents,

Take care guys,

Mallet
