| Episode 7 - Are the SM57 and the SM8 really the same.......? |
|
|
In this episode, I do a comparison between the Shure SM57 and the Shure SM58. I've heard people say that they are essentially the same microphone, and I tackle that by talking about their similarities and differences. I used another Shure mic, the SM7B, to record the beginning and end segments of this episode!
So let me know what you think of the episode. Are the samples apparent enough for you? Could I have done a better job? What experiences do you have with comparing these two mics?

Wow, this one is pretty old too, but hey why not? I read in a mag somewhere that the 2 mics are the same except the SM58 has a built in "pop" filter (ie. a little foam insert in the grill). Not absolutely possitive, but just repeating what I've read. |

Well, they do sound similar, but upon my own analysis there were definite differences. However, if you had 3 channels of a 57 on an amp and one of a 58 on the same amp, it'd be difficult to pick it out of the mix if all 4 were playing at once.
